Joe’s Judgements

Albarino is one of my favourite white grape varieties around at the moment, especially as a favourable alternative to Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc. I’ve also found that there are two different styles that you generally come across:

  1. Fruit-driven, crisp but well-rounded. Slightly simpler in terms of texture and body. Good on its own or with food.
  2. Citrussy, fruity with a real minerally texture and long finish, spectacular with food.

This wine is the latter. Beautiful gold in colour. Vina Almirante Pionero Albarino has an aroma that shows a lovely blend of grapefruit, herbal tones, citrus, and green fruits, mixed in with waxy hints. The palate is dominated by the vibrancy of green fruits and citrus, offering a richness up front, complemented by fantastic acidity. Its finish is loooong, ending with a drying mineral lift that you can really chew on for a while.

Never been a better seafood wine, pairs amazingly with anything from the sea. Prawns, oysters, mussels and more—let your imagination run wild. Its higher acidity and fresh, saline, mineral flavours make it a perfect match for fresh salads, fish and light, salted tapas!
