Matawhero Single Vineyard Gewurztraminer 2022

SKU: 10431 Category: Tags: , , , ,

The Matawhero journey started with two New Zealand wine pioneers from the 1960s. Today the story continues around the drive and determination of Kirsten and Richard Searle. who purchased the Matawhero vineyard and winery in Gisborne from Denis in 2008. They are the trusted Kaitiaki (guardians) of Matawhero and continue to develop the iconic winery and share the distinctive wine styles of the Tairawhiti-Gisborne region. Their single vineyard, dry-farmed

The first vineyard in New Zealand to plant Gewürztraminer, making the most of the silt and clay soils that contribute to the wines’ rich, dense fruit character.

The crushed grapes were kept in the press for several hours to maximise the spice and floral characters of this wonderful Gisborne variety. Once slightly clarified, the juice was carefully fermented using cool temperatures and an aroma enhancing yeast to maintain these vibrant characters in the final wine.

Pale straw with hints of gold. Exotic rose petal, clove, lychee and star anise notes. Clean fruit-driven style, rich and full with lychee, Turkish delight, spice and ginger.

Try pairing this with Asian or blue cheese dishes.

Alcohol – 12% ABV

*Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans

Joe’s Judgements

Gewurztraminer is a fantastic grape variety, treasured and adored for its floral aromas and tropical lychee and spices on the palate. Like a big boy version of Moscato, it’s highly perfumed and pretty darn exotic, with some Alsace versions, having a full and oily texture. These can often be very intense and I’ll only drink these in special occasions.

The Matawhero Single Vineyard Gewurztraminer is a different kettle of fish, more austere in its florality and showing a slightly more dry approach makes it far more refreshing than its French counterparts. It still has wonderful rose petal and lychee aromas, just more delicate and subtle. Star anise and pineapple on the palate with acidity that is very much present but soft as well. Lovely ginger and clove peeks its head out as well.

Fabulous with SPICED dishes, not SPICY. Think Goan fish curry, SE asian dishes, Middle Eastern dishes etc. Also superb with blue cheese.
