Leone de Castris – Villa Santera Primitivo Di Manduria

Appearance

• An incredibly deep coloured wine with notes of purple and garnet.

Nose

• On the nose is a rich perfume of plum, damson, black cherry, ginger and vanilla from oak.

Taste

• This is full bodied wine on the palate with balanced tannins and acidity. Plum, cherry, blackcurrant, spices and smoke all built to a full yet beautifully smooth velvety finish.

A long Period of maceration then leads to high temperature fermentation. The wine is then aged in oak barrel for at least 6 months.

Leone di Castris

• Based in Salice Salentino, a small village in the heart of the Salento IGT wine region. In 1665, Duke Oronzo who was a member of the Lemon noble Spanish family was enchanted by the area and sold all his holdings in Spain to set up vineyards. At this point he purchased 5 thousand hectares across Puglia. Over the next few hundred years the family mostly made wine for the locals and his family. However, in the beginning of the 19th century they began to export bulk wine to the US, Germany and France. The current name comes from a marriage in 1925 when Leone Plantera married Lisetta de Castris. The Castris family-owned vines in the north of Italy so now the family have large holdings all over. They were the first family to bottle rose wine in Italy.
