What the producer says

Nobody’s been bottling Pinotage longer than Lanzerac and this wine shows a wealth of experience with this proudly South African variety. The 2020 Pinotage boasts an excellent deep colour, ripe berries and plums on the nose and palate with a good mouth-feel and lingering aftertaste.  With 5 to 10 years’ maturation this wine will start to acquire the velvet density and luxurious chocolate and caramel flavours of its very early Lanzerac predecessors. A full-bodied, complex wine with a beautiful balance between fruit and wood showcasing a good tannin structure that will allow it to age extremely well.

About the producer

(There is more history here than can be easily summarised, I highly recommend you visit their website)

Lanzerac is steeped in spellbinding history, having been established in 1692 – a mere 13 years after Stellenbosch itself and is the third oldest farm in the area. The first owner was Isaac Schrijver who planted the very first vineyards and, unsurprisingly, named the farm Schoongezicht, meaning wonderful view. In the early 1800’s the first cellar was erected and subsequently complemented by the iconic Manor House, which exhibits an unusually high level of sophistication for Cape Dutch architecture of the period with its main gable dating back to 1830.

About the grape

Pinotage is relativly new as far as grapes go, having been created as a cross in the 1920’s, i’d argue that it took a while for producers to learn how to get the best out of the berry, given that its only recently gained the reputation for quality that it currently has.

Ross Recommends

This wine has been a bit of a staple in both the bar and shop over the years. I’ve always described it as ‘alcoholic Ribena’ because that’s what it is to me- Heavy on the blackcurrant and immensely quaffable.

Lanzerac make great, consistent, catagory defining wines for their region. The Pinotage is my favourite
