Domaine Chamonard Morgon 2018
After residing and laboring amidst the celebrated winemakers of Beaujolais, Joseph Chamonard nurtured an exceptional ecosystem for his Morgon vineyards. Situated on the slopes of Morgon, his vines thrived without the need for synthetic chemicals, harmoniously coexisting with the unspoiled, living soils while neighboring vineyards suffered from compacted earth and undernourished plants. Tragically, Joseph passed away in 1990, passing the stewardship of his 4-hectare plots in Corcelette, near the town of Ville-Morgon, to his daughter Genevieve and her husband, Jean-Claude Chanudet. With each passing vintage, this dynamic pair steadfastly upholds their commitment to eschew chemical interventions, both within and beyond the vineyards.
Sourced from 3.5 hectares of meticulously selected massale vines, boasting an average age of 60 years, primarily harvested from vineyards in the following localities: Le Colombier (adjacent to Corcelette), Les Grands Cras, Les Chênes, and Château Gaillard.
The grapes are carefully hand-picked at their peak ripeness. Whole clusters are gently placed into fermentation tanks for a semi-carbonic maceration process, where spontaneous fermentation is kickstarted by the indigenous yeast population. Carbonic maceration typically extends for an average of 12 to 30 days, and pressing is conducted using a traditional vertical wooden press. The latter part of the fermentation takes place in fermentation tanks and culminates in a maturation process in casks, demi-muids, and well-seasoned wooden barrels. The wine is left to rest on its lees for a period of 8 to 10 months.
Crafted exclusively from 100% Gamay grapes, this Morgon undergoes a semi-carbonic maceration process, resulting in its distinctive, vibrant profile characterized by bright notes of sour cherry and raspberry. It boasts an elegant, velvety tannic structure and possesses the potential for graceful ageing, promising a transformative flavour evolution over the years.

Morgon is one of the appellations (named areas) in the Beaujolais region and generally produces fleshier, fuller-bodied Gamay wines than people are probably expecting. These wines are intended for extended aging, typically between 5 to 10 years, if not more. The youthful, luscious palate, featuring flavors of peach, apricot, cherry, and plum, will gradually transform into a more earthy and complex wine, reminiscent of a Burgundian Pinot Noir. This wine most definitely follows suit.
Complex and inviting, with marked acidity and a cornucopia of flavours and aromas. On the nose is blackberry, ripe red fruits, violets, licorice and leather.Gravelly minerality adds fantastic minerality. Slightly carbonic with some ripe kirsch notes on the palate, medium-bodied and ripe tannins. Cranberry and strawberry are also present as well as a hint of mushroomy savoury elements and cardamom and black pepper. Couldn’t stop drinking this to be honest. Purity of fruit, elegance, complexity, texture and the beginning of maturity. J. Chamonard Morgon JUST BLOODY DELICIOUS.
