Chateau Ksara – Merwah

Appearance

• A rich golden yellow colour in the glass.

Nose

• On the nose are aromas of lemon citrus, mango, pineapple, white flowers and a hint of beach stones.

Taste

• The palate is full in flavours of rich tropical fruit like mango, guava, lime lemon, honeydew melon and lemon citrus.

The Native Merwah grape is handpicked at low yields. The whole bunch is pressed and given a short period of skin contact. After fermentation the wine is then given five days of fine lees aging.

Chateau Ksara

• Founded in 1857 by Jesuit priests with the goal of providing wine for mass. In 1898 an artificial Roman Grotto was discovered that now forms part of their 2KM wine cellar network. In 1972 the Vatican ordered the sell off of many commercial assets. As such the Winery was sold to a business consortium. Chateau Ksara is Lebanon’s oldest and largest winery. they have a strong wine tourism focus to their business. Most of their wines feature old world grapes thanks to their European church origins.

The Merwah Grape

• Merwah is native to the area of Lebanon and has been used for making wine for centuries, possibly even dating back to vinification of the bronze age and the Ancient Phoenicians. Merwah was one of the first varieties cultivated by the Jesuit missionaries back in the 18th century.
