Caves de Julienas-Chaintre Beaujolais Villages Cuvee Six 2020
In 2013 the Co-operative of Julienas and Macon-Chaintré united to form one company providing winemaking facilities for 169 winegrowers from across Southern Burgundy. The Cave selects the best grapes from its members and uses modern winemaking facilities to produce this range of wines that will give great pleasure immediately upon release at a price that won’t break the bank.
Situated in the quaint communities of Jullié and Emeringes, the grapes used for crafting this Beaujolais Villages originate from vines rooted in the sandy, granitic soils characteristic of the area. Harvesting is done manually, and the grapes undergo a 7-8 day maceration process in tanks, allowing them to interact with the skins for colour and aroma extraction.’
The Beaujolais Villages ‘Cuvee Six’ by Caves De Julienas Chaintre continually improves with each new vintage, revealing a delightful harmony of soft, rounded red fruits and lively cherry notes. Its complexity invites contemplation while maintaining an easygoing, supple nature. Ideal for lighter lunches, and when the temperature rises, a light chill enhances its charm.
This is one of my go-to Beaujolais in the shop, it’s always punched above its weight for me. Really nice chilled, super easy-drinking generally, and full of tart red fruit as any good Gamay should be.
Alcohol – 13.5% ABV

Beaujolais is often given a poor reutation due to the popularity (and subsequent abandonment) of Beaujolais Nouveau, considered carbonic, bubblegum and banana and showing no real structure or backbone to speak of. This is about as unfair as it gets in terms of bad rep. When done well, gamay is a fruity and nicely grippy wine that is great to drink at room temperature or chilled.
Wonderful red fruit, including some really nice cherry and raspberry tones. Soft, supple and rounded tannins with some good complexity to mull over. Fantastic for light lunches and charcuterie.
